Then night skiing stretches the day past the usual finish line.

It’s a resort combo that keeps the whole crew happy—and keeps the day feeling like it has a storyline.

Sunrise Skiing: the most “Hakuba core” way to start a day

There’s a version of Hakuba most people never see—because they’re still making coffee, still waiting on the first shuttle, still easing into the day. But if you’ve ever wondered why locals seem to treat certain mornings like a secret ceremony, Sunrise Skiing at Hakuba Goryu is the answer. It’s the feeling of sliding before the valley fully wakes up: quiet air, fresh corduroy (or fresh snow), and that calm focus you almost never find at 10:30 a.m. when lift lines and lesson groups start to stack.

Goryu leans into that vibe with early openings as early as 7:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays (always confirm the exact operating calendar for your dates). The first laps of the day aren’t about “sending it,” necessarily—though you absolutely can. They’re about clarity. Your turns feel cleaner. Your mind feels quieter. And the mountain feels like it belongs to you and a small group of people who know what they’re doing.

Then the best part hits later: when the resort shifts into its normal rhythm, you realize you didn’t just beat the crowds. You started the day with the kind of view and snow texture that makes you understand, in your bones, why people fly across the world for Hakuba.

If you’re building a “Hakuba core” day—one that’s equal parts efficiency, style, and story—Goryu + 47 is one of the strongest setups in the valley.

Two moods in one day: Goryu’s flow + 47’s freestyle energy

A lot of resorts do one thing extremely well. Goryu + 47 is compelling because it does multiple things well, and it’s easy to switch modes without overthinking logistics.

Start at Goryu to set the tone

For newer riders, Toomi and Iimori are the confidence-building side of the mountain. Wide, forgiving pitches help people relax quickly, which matters more than any single “must-do” run. As confidence grows, it’s easy to graduate into longer routes and bigger views without suddenly dropping into terrain that feels like a test.

When you’re ready for Goryu’s sharper edge, Alps-daira delivers the high-alpine feeling that defines Hakuba. This is where experienced riders tend to lock into rhythm, and where Goryu’s signature lines—especially the Grand Prix course—stand out when you want clean, satisfying carving and the “this is why we came” sensation of a proper Hakuba run.

Then switch to 47 for a different texture

When you want a new kind of energy—more freestyle, more session-based, more “let’s lap this feature until it clicks”—you go to Hakuba 47.

47 has earned its reputation for park culture for a reason. Even if you’re not a dedicated park rider, the atmosphere changes the way your day feels: more playful, more experimental, more social. It’s where people film each other, re-run the same section because “that one was close,” and turn a normal afternoon into a mini project.

And it’s not only park laps: 47 also gives you access to pockets of natural terrain and tree-lined skiing that feel completely different from a groomer-only day. On the right conditions, those tighter lines add another layer to the resort—more texture, more “find your rhythm,” more variety for the crew. (As always in Hakuba, what’s open, gated, or officially in-bounds can change day to day—check the resort’s current operations and signage.)

This is why Goryu + 47 is one of the clearest “choose your own day” resort combos in Hakuba. You can treat it like a performance day (fast laps, big vertical) or a creative day (features, repetition, progression). Or—if you’re doing it right—you do both.

Night skiing: a second session when everyone else is done

Night skiing on Goryu’s Toomi Slope is one of those perks that feels uniquely Hakuba—an extra chapter when most resorts are already winding down. The resort highlights a 1,000-meter groomed run lit with LED lighting and refreshed each night, making it approachable and consistently fun across ability levels. It’s not just “night vibes”—the nightly grooming is what keeps the experience smooth.

For 2025–26, Goryu has announced an expanded night-ski area that includes the Iimori No. 6 Lift, adding even more room to finish strong. For groups with mixed stamina, it’s ideal: the hard-chargers can go for a full second session, and everyone else can keep it mellow with a few laps under the lights and still feel like they fully did the day.

The karaoke gondola: the kind of detail people remember (anniversary special)

You asked for the “karaoke gondola” detail—and yes, it’s real. What I found is tied to Hakuba Goryu’s 55th anniversary : Goryu has been running special anniversary content, including a wrapped gondola and (per resort/patrol content) a karaoke-equipped gondola cabin.

Goryu’s patrol blog describes a “karaoke-equipped gondola” that lets riders enjoy karaoke during the roughly 7-minute ride, positioning it as a fun, one-off style experience rather than a standard cabin.

This is exactly the kind of “Hakuba story” detail that makes a trip feel personal: you’re not just logging runs—you’re collecting moments you’ll retell later.

ABLE Hakuba Goryu + Hakuba 47 stands out in a valley full of great mountains for one simple reason: it makes a mixed-group trip feel cohesive. You can start with the quiet magic of Sunrise Skiing, build confidence across Goryu’s zones, switch to 47’s creative park energy when you want freestyle progression, and stretch the day into night laps—resetting at Escal Plaza between it all.

You don’t just ride here. You build a storyline.
See you at Hakuba Goryu and 47 winter sports park!

Hakuba Goryu
・Official website: https://www.hakubaescal.com/
・X (Twitter): https://x.com/goryu_official
・Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hakubagoryuofficial/
・Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hakubagoryuofficial/

Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park
・Official website: https://www.hakuba47.co.jp/
・X (Twitter): https://x.com/Hakuba_47
・Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HKB47official/
・Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hakuba47wintersportspark/

Ikon Pass + Slopes: Your Season, Supercharged

Ikon Pass friends, ready for a glow-up? When storms hit, TsugaPOW days can be unreal. And for advanced riders, DBD tree riding adds a legit “serious mode” to the mountain.

And when you’re done riding, Tsugaike has the kind of après flow that makes you want to do it all again tomorrow.

TsugaPOW: the days people quietly plan their trips around

You’ve heard “Japow,” but in Hakuba there are days when people stop calling it that and start calling it TsugaPOW—because Tsugaike just hits differently when it’s on.

On those storm-cycle mornings, the mountain becomes a playground of soft landings, forgiving turns, and that addictive feeling where your legs are begging to stop… but your brain keeps saying “one more lap.” It’s the kind of powder that makes even simple terrain feel exciting, and makes strong riders start hunting for tree shots and natural features without needing anything fancy.

The best part: Tsugaike’s spacing and flow often let the day stay fun instead of frantic. Even on good snow days, it can feel less stressful than resorts where everything funnels into one “must-do” zone.

DBD: Tsugaike’s “serious mode” for advanced riders

For advanced riders, the headline at Tsugaike is DBD (Double Black Diamond)—a controlled powder zone that delivers the kind of lift-accessed tree riding people usually associate with “backcountry days,” without the long approach.

DBD isn’t a casual “duck a rope and hope for the best” situation. To enter, you need to complete a quick registration/check-in process (and follow the resort’s safety requirements), so everyone going in does so with awareness, preparation, and respect. When that mindset is in place, the reward is exactly what powder hunters chase: technical tree lines, natural features, deeper pockets, and terrain that feels like a different world from the groomers.

What makes DBD special is how repeatable it is. Because it’s lift-accessed, you can rack up quality laps when conditions are right—then step back into the main resort whenever you want. It’s the reason Tsugaike has such rare range: you can spend the morning cruising with friends, then flip the switch into a focused, technical session and still end the day together.

Tsugaike Snow Wall: the photo spot that proves how much snow falls here

If you want one “this is so Japan” winter moment to take home from Tsugaike, make it the Tsugaike Snow Wall. It’s the kind of place that instantly puts scale into perspective—because no caption really explains what deep snowfall looks like until you’re standing right next to it.

Located around 1,500m elevation, the Snow Wall area is carved out of Tsugaike’s heavy mid-winter snowpack. Up close, the walls can rise to around 3 meters, and it’s genuinely impressive: you feel small, the air feels colder, and suddenly you understand why Hakuba is Hakuba.

It’s quick, it’s scenic, and it’s one of those stops that turns your day from “we rode” into “we had a real winter trip.”

Note: The Snow Wall is a seasonal feature and availability/route details may change depending on snow and operations.

Kanenaru + SNOWWOW!: Why Tsugaike is a true “everyone-wins” resort

One of Tsugaike’s biggest advantages—especially for mixed groups—is that it doesn’t treat beginners and non-skiers as an afterthought.

At the base, the resort’s iconic wide-open slope Kane-no-Naru-Oka (“Kanenaru”) is the kind of terrain that makes first-timers relax instantly: spacious, gentle, and confidence-building. It’s ideal for families and newer riders, but it’s also a perfect warm-up zone for experienced riders who want a smooth start before chasing powder or park laps.

And if someone in your group doesn’t ski or snowboard (or just wants a break from riding), Tsugaike still delivers. Tsugaike SNOWWOW! is a dedicated snow-play area packed with quirky, surprisingly fun ways to enjoy winter—think snow racers, snow skates, snow striders, snow feet, and more. It’s the kind of place where “I’m not riding today” turns into “Wait… let me try that.”

This is what makes Tsugaike different: even if your crew has totally different skill levels—or totally different ideas of what’s fun—you can still share a full winter day together.

Gourmet at Tsugaike: local flavors worth planning a stop for

Tsugaike’s food scene is part of the fun—especially when you know what to look for. Right in front of the gondola boarding area, you can grab juicy Wagyu skewers or a Wagyu beef bowl that became a repeat favorite last season and is back again, coated in a signature sauce. It’s the kind of quick, satisfying stop that feels perfect between laps.

For something that tastes like Hakuba, look for dishes featuring Shinshu Salmon, raised in the area’s clear mountain streams—fresh, clean, and a great “Japan trip” flavor moment.

And when you’re properly chilled, go for the Rice Bowl Style special: a curry soup loaded with big, colorful vegetables and a whole bone-in stewed chicken. The chicken is tender, the vegetables are rich, and the soup warms you up fast—comforting in the best way, like it’s resetting your body (and mood) for the rest of the day.

Après at Tsugaike: the perfect “Japan winter” finish

Tsugaike doesn’t just deliver on snow—it nails the end-of-day flow. The best après isn’t about being fancy; it’s about being exactly what you crave after a cold, full day outside.

Once you’re done riding, the mood shifts in the best way. You step into the evening, with lights reflecting off white snowbanks, and that quiet, satisfying feeling of: we earned this.

And the closer is non-negotiable: the foot onsen. Boots off, feet in warm water, shoulders drop—then suddenly everyone’s replaying the day like it’s a highlight reel: best turns, best lines, the “did you see that?” moments you’ll keep talking about tomorrow. It’s simple, easy, and somehow it makes the whole day feel complete.

If you still have energy after that, Tsugaike is also the kind of place where the night can keep going—a casual drink, a low-key hang, even DJs playing music—because the vibe stays relaxed and everyone’s already in a good mood.

That’s why Tsugaike sticks in people’s memory: it’s not just a resort. It’s a full winter day that ends perfectly.

Tsugaike isn’t just a place you ski—it’s a place you experience. From TsugaPOW days and DBD tree sessions to wide-open terrain that works for every level, plus that perfect Japan-style après finish, it’s the kind of Hakuba trip that feels complete from first lift to the last warm soak.

See you at Tsugaike! Like watching the trees slowly turn white as you drive toward the resort, or seeing those huge snowbanks piled along the road. Even brushing snow off the car in the morning is kind of fun.

These days, I spend most of my winter in Hakuba, and I’m completely hooked. The snow there can be unreal — it’ll dump 50cm overnight, and by the next morning the mountain looks completely different. Trails disappear under fresh snow, the trees get heavier with powder, and everything resets. You never really know what the mountain will look like when you wake up — and that’s part of the fun.

And then there are the days where it just doesn’t stop. The kind of days where you lap the same tree run over and over and still find untouched lines. It felt like the mountain was refilling itself — just for us. It still blows my mind.

But Hakuba’s charm isn’t just in the snow.

One of my favorite memories this season was digging up snow-covered cabbage from a local farm — literally pulling it out from under a thick blanket of snow. The farmer handed it to us right there in the field, and that evening we turned it into a steaming hotpot. It was unbelievably sweet and crisp — one of the simplest, most satisfying meals I’ve ever had.

The food in Hakuba always leaves an impression — from handmade soba and wild mushroom nabe to warm, crusty bread and cozy cafés you stumble upon unintentionally. And even as the international crowd grows, the old neighborhoods, family-run shops, and long-standing traditions remain — giving the village a special mix of old and new that feels uniquely Japanese.

Some winters bring more snow than others — that’s just part of mountain life. But when it’s on, Hakuba truly delivers. I don’t even need to say much about the terrain or the views — they speak for themselves. The mountains are beautiful, and the riding just feels incredible. I’d heard it was big, but I didn’t realize just how big it was until I got there. The resort is massive. You can ride pretty much anywhere on the mountain, and the wide, open slopes give you this incredible feeling of freedom — like you’re not just following a trail, you’re exploring.

One thing I definitely wasn’t prepared for: the cold. It dropped to -17°C, and the air was so dry that it looked like everything was covered in glitter. Water froze, my eyelashes froze — and the snow sparkled. It was wild, freezing, and unforgettable.

Laax showed me what it looks like when the mountains aren’t just a trip, but a lifestyle. People weren’t rushing — they were fully in it. Riding hard, dancing in ski boots, grabbing a drink mid-run, then heading back up. The vibe was effortless and full of joy.
Social Slopes: No one will keep you off the internet, but you can reduce the time from social media channels & music streaming apps, as they can be a serious drain on the battery.
Warm Enough: Be careful not to place your phone beneath too many layers, as that can mess with GPS, but also stow it in a warm enough place that the cold doesn't zap it.
Lock it Up: Lock your phone once you start recording. Slopes runs smoothly in the background without needing to keep your screen active.
Tone it Down: Lower your screen brightness and turn off keyboard sounds and vibrations.

Apple Watch Advice: The most important thing you can do is keep your phone on you, even while recording through the Watch. When paired, the Watch lets your phone handle GPS tracking while it focuses on heart rate—nearly doubling battery life.

Why am I seeing inaccurate data in Strava?

Some of you might notice your Strava data doesn’t match Slopes. This happens because the Slopes algorithm filters out lift time and counts only run time for total distance, but Strava often combines them.
For speed, Slopes sends detailed data, but Strava uses its own GPS calculations, causing average and max speed to appear incorrect.
We have raised these issues with our Strava partnership contact, and we continue to remind them that it is causing frustration for our mutual users.

</details><details>

Why doesn't heart rate get sent to Strava?

We don’t send heart rate data to Strava because it never leaves your device or Apple Health. We don’t collect or store it, so it can’t be shared. We know there’s demand for this, and we’re exploring solutions for future updates.

Garmin’s autorun feature automatically records downhill runs and pauses the timer during chairlift rides. Resorts like Hakuba, Myoko, Niseko, and Yuzawa can get multiple meters of fresh snow in a single week. Resorts like Hakuba Valley, Nozawa Onsen, and Shiga Kogen offer legendary snowfall, epic terrain, and a great blend of traditional charm and modern convenience. To get there, simply hop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano Station (which takes about 90 minutes).

From there, it depends on where you're heading next:

Hakuba Valley is about an hour away by shuttle

Nozawa Onsen is only 25 minutes from Iiyama Station (one stop after Nagano) by bus

Shiga Kogen is about a 60-minute bus ride from Nagano Station

If you’re planning on bringing your ski gear with you or you want to hit multiple mountains, renting a car might be a better option — just be sure it has winter tires, and remember, Japan drives on the left side of the road.

Looking for something even more convenient?

Head to Yuzawa, one of the easiest snow escapes in the world. Just make sure you explore responsibly.

7. 🍶 Après-Ski, the Japanese Way

Après-ski in Japan has its own rhythm — its less about going wild, and more about winding down, sharing stories, and warming up from the inside out.

After the lifts stop spinning, you’ll usually find riders heading straight to an onsen to soak away the day, then meeting up with friends at a local izakaya (Japanese pub) and catching up over plates of grilled yakitori, sashimi, edamame, and good local sake. It’s casual, comforting, and always hits the spot.

Not ready to end the night just yet? Many ski towns also have cozy karaoke bars. Whether you’re singing with friends or locals, it’s completely normal to end the night with a mic in one hand and a highball in the other.

In Japan, après isn’t just one thing — it’s a mix of ritual, food, and fun. Locals appreciate the effort, even if your pronunciation isn't quite right. Plus, it makes those little moments — like chatting with a liftie, ordering at a ramen shop, or getting directions — way more fun.

Here are a few handy ones to keep in your pocket:

Konnichiwa (こんにちは) = Hello
Daijoubu (大丈夫) = I’m okay / It’s alright
Oishii! (おいしい) = Delicious!
Doko desu ka? (どこですか？) = Where is ___?
Onsen wa doko desu ka? = Where’s the hot spring?

And if you forget everything else?
Just smile and bow — it’s the universal Japanese superpower.

9. 🙇‍♂️ Keep an Eye Out for the Small Details

Japan is all about the details — and that includes how people move, speak, and share spaces. Understanding a few basic cultural habits will help you blend in and avoid any unintentional faux pas.

For starters, quiet is the norm, especially in public areas. Whether you're in a gondola, on a shuttle bus, or walking through your ryokan hallway, keep your voice low and phone calls to a minimum. It’s not about being stiff, it’s just part of the respect-driven culture.

Here are a few other things worth knowing:

・Take your shoes off when entering homes, ryokans, and sometimes even restaurants or changing rooms. If there’s a step-up and slippers nearby, shoes off is the way to go.

・Don’t bring your towel into the onsen water. Wash first, leave the towel on the side, and soak respectfully.

・Always follow the line. Japanese skiers queue up neatly for lifts, buses, and restaurants — no crowding, no cutting, just quiet order.

The beauty of Japanese ski culture isn’t just in the powder — it’s also in the way people treat each other and the mountain. When in doubt, follow the flow, observe what others do, and don’t be afraid to ask politely.

10. 🏔️ It’s More Than a Ski Trip

The powder might be what brings you to Japan — and yeah, it’s incredible — but it’s everything else that will stay with you.

It’s the quietness of a snow-covered forest. The feeling of stepping into a steaming onsen as flakes swirl around you. The first sip of hot sake after a long day in waist-deep powder. The warmth of strangers who help you with directions even if you don’t speak the same language. The vending machine green tea that somehow hits just right.

Skiing in Japan is a rhythm: deep turns, deep rest, deep respect. It’s a chance to slow down, reconnect with the mountains, and experience a culture that moves with quiet intention.

And here's another piece of advice so that you can enjoy your trip without worry — book everything ahead of time. Resorts, trains, and ryokans fill up fast, especially in peak powder season. Planning early means less stress for yourself… and more time to float through the good stuff.

You’ll come for the snow.
And you’ll leave thinking about how to get back.

We can't wait to meet you out on the slopes! ❄️🎿

Our Epic Ski-venture in Hakuba Valley🎿

Our unforgettable week in the snow with the winners—from fresh powder to après-ski laughs, these are memories we'll cherish long after the snow melts.

Slopes

Time flies when you're having fun! Back in November, we kicked off the season with a challenge to win an all-inclusive trip to Hakuba Valley with the Slopes team. Now, with spring right around the corner, we've returned from an unforgettable week in the snow with the winners. From fresh powder to après-ski laughs, these are memories we'll cherish long after the snow melts.

Meet Kevin and Noah!

Of course, none of these memories would exist without our challenge winner, Kevin from Spokane, WA, and his friend Noah, who joined in on the adventure. From the moment they landed in Hakuba, they brought an infectious energy that perfectly matched the mountain's magic.

Kevin and Noah - our challenge winners

A Smooth Start 🌲❄️

Kevin’s favorite moment happened on the very first day of our trip. We were greeted with deep powder and an incredible terrain, making it impossible to resist spending the entire day in Tsugaike Mountain Resort's famed Double Black Diamond (DBD) zone. This area is known for having some of the best lift-accessed powder in the entire valley, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Tucked beside the resort’s upper lift, the DBD zone transported us into a powder-filled realm of its own. With deep snow blanketing the forest and sunlight filtering through the trees, each run felt like we were uncovering a new hidden treasure.

But don't mistake serenity for simplicity. As Tsugaike’s crown jewel for advanced riders, DBD offers resort-managed access to steep, ungroomed terrain with all the feels of a true backcountry without the long approaches. Be prepared to sign in at the gate, collect your avalanche gear (beacon, shovel, probe), and check with patrol before entering.

The terrain delivered in every way imaginable with its long technical tree runs, natural features, deep gullies, and neverending powder bowls. The light, bottomless Hakuba powder practically demanded us to give big turns and bolder drops. We followed Kevin and Noah through glades that twist along the frozen creek bed, and paused only to soak in the silence and exchange wide-eyed grins with one another.
<figure class="kg-card We explored fresh lines, took in unbeatable views, and even had a truly magical encounter — spotting a kamoshika hanging out between the trees! These elusive creatures are considered to be one of Japan’s national symbols. They’re often referred to as the “spirit of the forest” because of their quiet, solitary nature and ability to seamlessly blend into their surroundings. Seeing one in the wild is a good omen — a sign of good fortune for many years to come.

And the real star of the show? The snow itself. Tsugaike is famous for its “Tsuga POW,” a super light, dry powder that makes you feel like you're floating. Locals know it, and now we do too: on some runs, it felt like we were barely touching the ground. The combination of elevation, weather patterns, and perfectly spaced terrain gives this area some of Hakuba Valley's most playful, rideable snow. Turn after turn, it was nothing but pure fun.

Take a peek at the kamoshika!

From Our Lens... 📸

We’re beyond grateful to our team photographers Justin and Travis who were able to capture these moments for us to look back on. Building Slopes without external funding meant it took me three years after launching to go to full-time by myself, and a couple more to lay the foundations for a team. But we've only grown (fast!) since then.

As of this season, Slopes is a team of seven full-time employees, two contractors, two interns, and me. 🤯 Everything you've seen in Slopes over the past few years around interactive resort maps is the kind of feature only an amazing team can pull off. I thought it'd be cool to start pulling back the curtain and allow others at Slopes to share the awesome stuff they've been cooking up directly with you, beginning with Jess and Lydia from our mapping team...

— Yours, Curtis aka the Slopes Guy 🌨🤞

2000+ resorts are covered by Interactive 3D Maps, so you can confidently ski the world.

Guest Writers - Lydia, Jess @Mapping Team

No matter if you're riding in Europe, North America, Australia, or Japan, on Epic, Ikon, or any other ski area, we want Slopes to be there for you wherever you go and whenever you need it.

We’ve been consistently expanding our coverage of 3D interactive maps since they were first introduced in 2021. And now, we’re kicking off this season with over 1,500 new resorts added to the list, bringing our total coverage to 2,000+ resorts across the world. About 650 of these areas feature custom Slopes mapping meticulously crafted by our team, while the rest are sourced through a special integration with OpenStreetMap (OSM).

Slopes App - Interactive 3D Maps View

The idea of leveraging OSM data to rapidly expand our mapping coverage was game-changing. Hand-mapping each resort is rewarding but time-intensive. By pulling in and enhancing OSM data for 1,500+ resorts, we tripled the size of our map collection, creating one of the largest sets of high-quality digital ski maps on a single platform.

If you're curious about how we develop our custom-crafted maps and why they're so time-intensive, Lydia offers a more in-depth look at the process in our blog post here.

What's Cooking Next

We're laser-focused on further enhancing the mapping experience in the upcoming releases. We've just made major backend upgrades to the mapping system, to support complex layers of information such as ropes, gates, slow zones, restricted areas, and resort points of interest.

Breckenridge Resort and Tsugaike Mountain Resort will debut these enhancements today, offering an exclusive glimpse into our future. In the coming months and seasons, we'll gradually roll out this next generation of High-Definition Maps for top resorts.

Slopes HD Maps Preview (ropes, gates, restricted areas) - Breckenridge Resort

Finally... A Celebration! Join the Slopes team in Japan! 🇯🇵

Japan takes center stage this season as we expand our international support. Slopes is now the official app of Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Hakuba Valley, and we're rolling out features tailored to the Japanese market, along with exclusive Slopes Premium perks for Tsugaike Mountain visitors. If you happen to be visiting Japan, our maps now support trail names and resort info in English, in addition to Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana. Bonus, you can enjoy new Japanese-themed app icons.

To celebrate this partnership, we're planning a pow trip to Hakuba Valley from February 23rd to March 1st. But traveling around, I've come to find that there's a thrill in discovering new places and sliding into new worlds with fresh snow and new sensations rushing under my feet. There's always the excitement (and anxiety!) of navigating a new resort - “Did I take the right turn?"- hoping not to end up on the opposite side of where you're supposed to be, or worse — in someone's backyard.

Slopes interactive maps are really cool and handy. They allow you to see your position on the mountain relative to the runs, lifts, and amenities of the resort, and also look for your friends. Whether you're searching for the best tree runs or the easiest route from the summit to where your party is, our maps are the best way to help you orient yourself with your surroundings, in real-time, in 3D.

We have an entire department dedicated to creating and maintaining maps. Yes, we make our own maps, which often raises the question, "Why do you do it? Haven't ski resorts been mapped a thousand times already?" The short answer is… not so short. We create our maps because we realized there wasn’t any reliable (and large enough) collection of high-quality digital resort maps out there — and it's not like we weren't searching. Moreover, this approach allows us to structure and maintain the data in perpetuity and in a way that seamlessly integrates with our app, providing the best possible experience.

Is it time-intensive to map ski resorts? You bet! Is it worth it? We wouldn't do it otherwise. Curious to see how?

The Process

At the most basic level, each symbol on a digital map represents at least one set of geographic coordinates that relate to a specific location on the Earth’s surface. Spatial data like this is most useful when stored using geographic information systems (GIS). GIS is a powerful tool that allows us to store the data we create with a host of non-spatial information, aka attributes, containing essential information for displaying and describing the resort data. Attributes are stored as layers in the software - Walkways, Runs, Lifts, Buildings, are all layers used to create the maps in the app.

Slopes ArcGIS Screenshot - with layers and list of runs, lifts, etc

Slopes maps include almost everything you'd find on a resort trail map and enhance the spatial awareness when navigating resorts. It's hard to find your way among the trees with a printed or an overlayed pdf, but that's not the case on Slopes ¯\(ツ)/¯.

Starting the process, it’s important to know where to find the most current and accurate information to reference. This information comes from two primary sources: 1) the official ski resort website and 2) Skiresorts.info, maintained by the National Ski Area Association (NSAA).

Creating Spatial Data

Mapping ski resorts from scratch, we use GIS software to layer our data over high-resolution imagery and other spatial datasets. This imagery, often at 1-meter resolution in many parts of the world, comes from satellite and aerial sources. We use it as a reference to manually draw resort features (yup, that's right, we draw overlays by hand) in their correct geographic locations. The fine resolution of the imagery allows us to clearly map lifts and resort buildings.

Using multiple sources of data to accurately draw resort features.

While we can often see where trees have been cleared for ski runs, accurately placing the runs is more challenging. Run paths are often close together, and there's no clear marker to indicate their start and endpoints. Similarly, it's difficult to determine the location of walkways from imagery alone. To accurately map runs and walkways, we need additional information. How do we really know where the runs go? This is where our Slopes data comes into play.

We use fully anonymized data from Slopes recordings to improve the accuracy of our maps. We plot a subset of this data as a heatmap and layer it under the resort. Combined with official trail maps, we are then able to determine where to add run lines, and their orientations. This information removes the guesswork and provides us with good accuracy.

Slopes heatmap for Breckenridge Resort, CO USA.

Map QA

After mapping a resort, we then check to make sure the data is correct. Our first quality assurance step uses a custom-built tool designed for Slopes resort data structure. This tool identifies unusual combinations or missing attributes, flagging errors and warnings. Alerts prompt us to review and correct the data as needed.

QA tool error and alerts that prompt data corrections for Zermatt Matterhorn, Switzerland.

Getting a second pair of eyes is essential in catching errors such as discrepancies with official resort maps, misspellings, misplacements, and incorrect attribute inputs. We use Slopes heatmaps in our QA checks to verify that features are correctly positioned.

QA is a constant, ongoing process. Our resort map data is revisited annualy, when ski areas are upgraded, removed, or expanded. At the start of each season, when new maps are released, our data analyst manually compares the current trail map to the one from previous seasons. They will identify features that need updating and pass the information to our GIS analysts for changes.

But that’s not all! We also make updates based on user-submitted corrections. These submissions are invaluable to our QA process, and we can't stress that enough. We have a network of dedicated snow sports enthusiasts who help by submitting corrections through the app (one of them might even be you). When a user reports an issue, our mapping team starts to investigate the matter further.

Screenshot - User Corrections Form

Once the mapping process is complete, Curtis does his server magic, and the resort data becomes available for users to interact with and enjoy.

It takes a ski village to get it right, so we highly encourage slopes enthusiasts to write in about the maps and submit corrections. You help us make the app great, and we appreciate the feedback.

2024 Challenge: Win A Trip to Hakuba Valley with the Slopes Team 🇯🇵

We plan a pow trip to Hakuba Valley from February 23rd to March 1st.
